I felt like I was being trolled...finally got a decent response at least. No discussions of that here, though! This is a safe place!

yea it's still going for me.
I'm apparently a "Cafeteria Catholic" because I don't think gays should be stoned to death.

Well I AM Irish Catholic.
How'd you know?
Only thing available for drink in the Irish Catholic Cafeteria is Irish Whiskey

I DO love it.
It is sincerely my favorite GM Muscle Car. You know me! Gotta pick something weird, can't just like a Chevelle SS or a GTO Judge. Like my obsession with Mercury Muscle.
I really don't know why I keep responding on that other article.

same...how's yours going? Haven't checked in.

Hows my obsession with Mercury going? not well, I'm being pulled in further. It's my answer to everything now, like Miata for some people.
My religious thread has turned into a hysterical thing about how some protestants and baptists think that Catholics are not Christian.

Haha...I giggled at both parts of this.
Yes, giggled.
In regards to vehicles, my buddy and I keep chatting about all the mid-sized trucks that will be arriving. We're both really looking forward to the competition and options! I'm pining for a Ranger, though.

I'm done now because my discussion has turned into the exact same argument I had with my friend a couple months ago. A third party was sitting in on our discussion and told me afterwards something like: "I am really surprised at ____ and how adamant he was in his point of view. You played devil's advocate the entire time without subscribing to your religious background and he would not let go of the same argument. If this were a debate I would have said you easily won but it was not. How you kept your cool, however, is beyond me."
I don't even know what his religious affiliation is, if any.
What bugs me the most of my conversation today is the extremism. I don't care one way or another if you think religion is stupid but the stance on extremism is beyond me. Perhaps it is narrow-minded of me but there is a reason we can identify extremism of any type instead of calling it "orthodox."
I enjoyed reading your exchanges a lot more.

Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't bring up religion or politics online much. It normally results in idiocy. I'm glad I had an OPPO partner over there on that one.
Any time you'd like to chat about it let me know.
I agree with you about the different levels of religion though. Mainly, claims it but doesn't practice, holiday only christians (We call them Chreasters, show up for easter and christmas mass only lol), standard go as much as you can, orthodox (never miss a thing), and extremist.
I liked your point that he was trying to make it black and white when there is so much gray area in it all.
I thought I'd end with a fun joke/sign that a priest in Michigan had made and hung up in the back of the church over the door. (This is a seriously big church too).
It simply says carved into wood "Judas left early too"
The BEST was seeing someone get up to leave early see the sign and sit back down. Was hysterical and happened frequently lol

That sign is hilarious!
Religion is a complicated thing with ties that go beyond simple beliefs. It formed out of a need for explaining the unknown and inexplicable as well as a need for community and order. Many people arguing against religion ignore that piece of humankind's need for community. We are social beings.
My friend discounted the above completely. He said that we have already formed these communities and all religion does is exclude others for not accepting a belief system. I countered with how removing religion simply leaves other differences to take the forefront, be it regional pride or otherwise, because while humans are social and seek to be included we also look for ways to exclude others who do not fit an individually formed bias.
Long story short, if you ever feel the need to chat or need backup you let me know!
